Motoplanete's Encyclopedia of Motorcycle Brands is the result of several years of internet research into the world of motorcycling, to provide the most comprehensive overview possible of the history of motorcycle brands.

The information comes from a wide range of sources and media, some of which are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 CC-BY-SA 3.0 Unported license.

Knowledgeable enthusiasts will certainly recognize the connection with the famous "Illustrated Encyclopedia of Motorcycles", by the renowned Erwin Tragatsch. Indeed, the Tragatsch encyclopedia was one of our verification tools, helping us corroborate information gathered over the years. Motoplanete's Encyclopedia of Motorcycle Brands is not intended as a sequel or reinterpretation of Tragatsch's work, but as a humble tribute to him, attempting to complement some of his information and add new ones.

The information found on the Internet comes from media and databases such as :

  • the archives of the CNRV (Centre national de réception des véhicules)
  • INPI (Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle)
  • WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) - Worldwide trademark database
  • GTU Oldtimerservice - German public archive and information database
  • Grace's Guide - An exceptional database on British motorcycle production
  • Sheldon's EMU – a website listing numerous European brands
  • Many enthusiasts have passed on brand names from their personal memories and/or research. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
  • The Motoclopedia website - full of information on how long different brands have been around.
  • The Trademarkia.com website
